Event of the Week: A Crystal Gala

Momentum Organization Party Benefits Long Beach Youth

The community of Long Beach, CA showed their commitment to helping the area’s youth by participating in A Crystal Gala, held at The Grand September 28. The event featured keynote speaker Malcolm Johnson, SVP of J.P. Morgan, and music by the award-winning Gia’s Fix. The gala was created by the Momentum Organization to help raise funds for those in need.

Nanci Baer, one of the co-founders of the organization, spoke more about the event. “The event was a served dinner, silent auction, with Keynote speaker and known Hollywood band for entertainment,” she said. “Proceeds benefitted programs and facility for ‘at risk’ youth in Los Angeles County.”

The Momentum Organization is a California 501©(3) corporation whose mission, according to its website, is to “promote the success of the economically challenged, by addressing prevalent obstacles.” The organization helps the community providing resources to those in the Long Beach community who fall within the “Low Income” category.” These resources can include drug prevention and remedial programs, lessons in honing life skills, and more.

Promoting the event took several different avenues, including professional help. “ advertised online with several PR distribution engines, word of mouth, targeted attendees who knew the speaker and/or band,” she said. “Also published a press release in Long Beach (where the event was held), Los Angeles and Orange County weekly papers. Frankly, most attendees knew the speaker, the band, were donors, or government agency representatives who fund our programs.”

This gala was a first for the organization, and achieved the goal of creating awareness about those less fortunate. “It was the first annual gala and we had 175 attendees,” said Baer. With the awesome turnout, it’s well on its way to becoming one of the highlights of Long Beach’s event calendar.

The speech given at the gala was one of Baer’s highlights of the night.  “I think Malcolm Johnson…was very well received. His message encouraged community involvement and emphasized change is possible.”

If you’re facing the same challenge the Momentum Organization faced with planning your own gala, Baer has some tips for success, chief among those being to plan ahead. “Plan a year in advance to ensure you get the speaker and venue you want,” she said. “Ours was a charity benefit.  For a charity benefit, get volunteers who can help with décor, soliciting silent auction items and will work at the event.  Everything you can do yourself will mean more of the event proceeds are retained.”
