Event of the Week: Anula Spring Nite

Event Raises Money for Sri Lankan Girls’ School Anula Vidyalaya

The 10th of November was the day of the Anula Spring Nite event at the Greyhound Social Club in Yagoona. The event, which also featured a Sri Lankan buffet and music by Redemption, was held in honor of a prestigious girls’ school in Sri Lanka.

The girls’ school, Anula Vidyalaya, was founded on the 4th of January in 1941 by Dr. E.W. Adikaram, an educationist, scholar, philosopher, writer and humanist, according to the school’s official site. Adikaram–along with the school’s pioneer principal, P.B. Fernando and the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture, Deshamanya D.S. Senanayake—began the school with just 38 students and five teachers. Now, after 68 years, the school has 4200 students and 170 teachers. The principal—a title now held by Kalyani Gunasekara—and staff make sure to teach their students the Buddhist principles of self discipline, non-violence and selfless service.

The exclusive Buddhist school abides by its vision statement, “May she produce brilliant examples of Ladies who will shine in the society.” The school aims to live up to the original vision by giving its students an opportunity to live to their full potential and take action in their community. In short, the school aims to build “Perfect Ladies” that will uplift society.

The school also has a thriving alumni organization, the Past Pupils Association of the Anula Vidyalaya. The association aims to improve the infrastructure, facilities, and curriculum of the school. The mission of the association is to serve the school and “uphold companionship among past and present Anulians.”

Lucky Waniganayake, the creator of the event, said the vent was “ dinner/dance to raise some funds…to send back home” as well as have fun.

Waniganayake used word of mouth and the community website to spread the word about the event. The strategies worked, and the event was able to meet its target of 260 guests, including children.

Waniganayake said one surprise at the event was a great belly dancing performance; other highlights of the night were the great raffle prizes guests were able to win. Waniganayake also said the tickets helped enhance the event. “ happy with the quality and will recommend to another group for their ticket printing,” she said.
