Emotional Connections Abound During Kerry & Kath’s Krusaders 2015 Walk for Cancer Raffle
Support, fundraising and remembrance were the themes for the 17th of October’s Kerry & Kath’s Krusaders 2015 Walk for Cancer Raffle. The raffle included prizes such as four tickets to the Sydney 500 V8 Supercars event, dinner for two at Parramatta’s Cosmopolitan Bar, a signed 2015 Wests Tigers Jersey, memorabilia featuring the 2001 Melbourne Cup winner Ethereal, and men’s and ladies’ Ray Ban sunglasses.
Matthew Pontin, National Loss Prevention Manager for Kerry & Kath’s Krusaders, wrote about how the event honoured the lives of two people who are dear to him. “The Macarthur area hosts an annual ’24 hour fight against cancer’ charity walk. The outdoor, overnight fund raising event provides much needed funding to the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre, Paediatric Ambulatory Care Unit at Campbelltown Hospital and the Palliative Day Care Unit at Camden Hospital,” he wrote. “Our team, The Krusaders started in 2012 in honour of Kathy, my wife, who after 4 years lost her battle with cancer in Feb 2012. Kath was 47. This year, a close friend who was mates with my wife also lost her mum to cancer so this year we added her to our team name.”
The event’s promotion featured a large network of support. “Just word of mouth and a large network of work mates, colleagues, friends and friends of friends” helped spread the word about the event, stated Pontin. “ just shared our story to make them connect to why we were doing it.”
The event, wrote Pontin, went well. What was the most encouraging was the amount of emotional outpouring. “Each year we raise less and less,” he wrote. “As bad as it may sound, people donate emotionally and as this diminishes so does the support over time which is why you have to come up with something new. The raffle was the first time we tried it and had some great support for the prizes.”
If you’re planning an event like this one, Pontin suggests finding people who are as excited about your event and mission as you are. “Get lots of help and get people who are passionate about why your raising money,” he wrote. He also wrote that perforated raffle books are easier to use rather than a non-perforated ticket option.
